TIER2’s first publisher workshop: outcomes and ideas for co-creation

15 February 2024

On 31 May 2023, TIER2 convened its first publisher workshop, attended by 20 representatives of major publishers. The aims were to discuss initiatives, measures, and interventions, in development or in place, to increase reproducibility of published research. Furthermore, participants identified and prioritised new or existing areas for further development, where TIER2 could either contribute to, or drive, developments.

Following the event, the first TIER2 Publisher Workshop report was created, summarising the outcomes of the survey and workshop, and presenting TIER2's ideas for two co-creation activities, emerged from the discussions:

1. Pilot Data availability statements (DAS)

Editorial workflows to increase data sharing, developed via workshops with publisher representatives and editors. The planned intervention will provide editors with straightforward workflows to improve DASs, for example by pushing back on problematic statements such as "data available on request". Co-leaders: Thomas Klebel and Tony Ross-Hellauer (KNOW).

2. Pilot Handbook

An educational reference handbook, aiming to operationalise and harmonise editorial checks to assist reproducibility and FAIRness. The planned intervention will target in-house staff managing the manuscripts, but also benefit reviewers and authors making the requirements transparent to them. Co-leaders: Allyson Lister and Susanna-Assunta Sansone (University of Oxford); Rebecca Taylor-Grant and Matt Cannon (Taylor and Francis).

The pilots kick-off in February, and the activities will also be connected to relevant publishers initiatives and groups of the Research Data Alliance (RDA), such as the RDA Data Policy Standardisation and Implementation Interest Group, and the RDA FAIRsharing Working Group
