TIER2 Reproducibility Hackathon @ FENS Forum 2024

30 June 2024

TIER2 – enhancing Trust, Integrity and Efficiency in Research through next-level Reproducibility, is an EU Horizon Europe project that aims to broaden our knowledge and understanding of reproducibility, co-create and test tools, engage and grow communities, and implement high-quality policies.

Reproducibility and Replication is important in neuroscience as it constitutes an opportunity to improve the way research is conducted and to promote scientific progress, allowing other neuroscience researchers to build on work done previously by others. As in other disciplines, many believe that we are in the midst of a credibility revolution, with factors such as questionable research practices, insufficient transparency in reporting, and publication biases exacerbating the lack of reproducibility.

During the TIER2 Reproducibility Hackathon (ReproHack), participants collectively work together, attempting to reproduce research findings that have been published previously. It is important to note that this event format is not intended to criticize or discredit any research efforts. Instead, reproduction attempts are a beneficial scientific activity with useful outcomes for the original authors and valuable learning experience for both the participants and the wider research community.

Participants of this ReproHack have the option to either select a publication from a list provided by the organizers or to propose a publication themselves. The main aim of this event is to connect neuroscientists to gain insights into reproducibility, exchange knowledge, and share experiences.

During the one-day hackathon, we will have two lightning talks by researchers and experts active in the space of reproducible research and Open Science. Dr Anna Krystalli, research software engineering consultant as well as founder and core team member of ReproHack, will provide a brief introduction to ReproHacks. While Emma Wilson, PhD student in Clinical Brain Sciences (CAMARADES, University of Edinburgh) and science communicator, will talk about reproducibility in neuroscience.

Catering will be provided for the participants.

Location

The event will be hosted by researchers from the Charité | BIH QUEST Center for Responsible Research, at the University of Vienna, Faculty of Psychology, Lecture hall E, Level OG01, Room numer 01.19.  Liebiggasse 5, 1010 Vienna.

We thank the SCAN Unit and Claus Lamm for providing us with a meeting venue and logistic support for the ReproHack.

Further detailed information on the event location and how to get there will be provided to the registered participants.
